MACKENZIE SONGSTAD

MACKENZIE’S STORY

Mackenzie Songstad took the S.A.V.E. Yourself® Academy training as part of her employment with the City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A few months later, she met up with her sister in Las Vegas to attend the Route 91 festival.

When the shots rang out, everyone immediately dropped to the ground. But after just a few seconds, Mackenzie said she could hear Sheriff Sheehan’s voice, “Do something. Do anything.” She grabbed her sister’s hand, and they ran until they found an exit.

Mackenzie attributes the S.A.V.E. Yourself® Academy training to having saved both her life and her sister’s that day.

This is a perfect example of how you can use the S.A.V.E. Yourself Academy® training to SAVE Yourself anywhere at any time — rock concerts, doctors’ offices, grocery stores, and houses of worship.

FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Answers to common questions about S.A.V.E. Yourself® training.

What should employers do to prepare?

Develop emergency action plans, provide regular training, encourage reporting of concerning behavior, practice emergency procedures.

How can employees prepare without becoming paranoid?

Preparation is about awareness and planning, not fear. Just as people practice fire drills, they should also prepare for rare acts of violence.

Why choose online training as opposed to in-person training?

When listening to a live speaker, the retention rate of the human brain drops sharply over time, dipping to around 10% after just one week. Our training is available to you anytime, anywhere for a period of 1-year.

Can an active killer incident really happen in my community?

Unfortunately, yes. Violent incidents occur in communities of every size. While the likelihood may be low, understanding how to respond can make a life-saving difference.

Who should take this type of training?

Everyone benefits, including businesses, schools, houses of worship, healthcare workers, parents, volunteers, and community organizations.

Can ordinary people really survive violent attacks?

Yes. Many survivors credit quick decision-making, awareness, and simple actions, not special physical abilities. S.A.V.E. Yourself® training greatly improves your ability to recognize danger, make better decisions under stress, and increase your chances of Surviving A Violent Encounter.

What is situational awareness?

Situational awareness means paying attention to your surroundings, identifying potential threats, and asking yourself, "What would I do?"

What if I freeze?

Freezing is a normal human stress response. Our training helps people recognize that response, defeat it, and act.

Why is mindset so important?

Your mindset influences every decision you make under stress. People who mentally prepare for emergencies often respond faster and more effectively.

Can anyone learn survival skills?

Absolutely. The skills we share are teachable regardless of age, occupation, or physical fitness.

Will this training scare people?

No. Our training is unique in that it is designed to empower people to act. If anyone completes our training in fear, we have failed.

Is this only about active shooters?

No. Active killers use all types of weapons to harm innocent victims, which include edged weapons, improvised explosives, vehicles, etc. The principles we share apply to many forms of violence, including workplace assaults and other violent encounters.

How often should I refresh my training?

Reviewing your skills every year and practicing simple scenarios periodically helps keep the information fresh.

How do I teach my children without frightening them?

Focus on simple, age-appropriate safety habits rather than worst-case scenarios. The goal is empowerment and preparedness, not fear. We will have an animated video for elementary-aged children coming soon!
